The New York Times is, of course, puzzled:
The War Endures, but Where’s the Media?
The article cites many possibilities for this conundrum, including vague loss of interest by readers, as well as:
The War Endures, but Where’s the Media?
Five years later, the United States remains at war in Iraq, but there are days when it would be hard to tell from a quick look at television news, newspapers and the Internet. But why?
Media attention on Iraq began to wane after the first months of fighting, but as recently as the middle of last year, it was still the most-covered topic. Experts offer many other explanations for the declining media focus, like the danger and expense in covering Iraq, and shrinking newsroom budgets. Hillary Says Our Military Needs “Rebuilding”...
...but the enlistment for one of our most-deployed infantry divisions has met its yearly quota--in half the allotted time! From the Mudville Gazette (hat tip: Instapundit):
“In case that wasn’t clear, I’ll explain: the 3ID - the Division that took Baghdad in 2003, did a second tour in Iraq in 2005, and then bore the brunt of the surge in 2007, exceeded it’s re-enlistment goal for FY2008 half way through the year.”
“But I was just kidding when I called it a ‘news story’ - no national news source in America would ever even consider running a story like that.”
Yep, so true. Can you imagine what it would be like if we didn’t have to run against the relentless hurricane-force wind of media bias?
”
Emphasis mine. So, can anyone seriously say that they heard Katie Couric herald the success of the enlistment efforts of the 3ID?
